WASHINGTON - Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey addressed the audience of the Warrior Resiliency Conference IV, sponsored by the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury in Washington D.C., March 30.
Focused on restoring readiness and enhancing resilience across the military community, the conference brought together members of military medical and non-medical communities, enlisted and officer, for two days of conversation and learning.
As the senior-most officer in the Unites States military, Dempsey spoke to his colleagues with candor about the military’s challenges and successes and the important work being done across the services to ensure the fitness of the force.
“Resiliency is a team sport,” Dempsey said. “We can’t let our young men and women learn that the hard way.”
He illustrated his point with his recent bout with throat cancer, saying it was that challenge which taught him that he had to rely on others to survive.
Dempsey said his personal experience reinforced his belief that the tie that binds service members and their communities is based on trust. He said earning and keeping that trust is the essence of what the military community does every day and that part of that equation is the collaborative effort between medical personnel, leaders and communities.
Taking a question from a young Army officer who found himself juggling multiple duties while also serving as the Master Readiness Trainer for his unit, Dempsey acknowledged the challenges service members face. He said, chuckling, that he and other senior leaders knew exactly what the military community is dealing with and went on to express his confidence in their abilities.
Dempsey said as the concepts and practices of resilience building continue to grow and develop, his hope is that it will eventually become second nature for leaders and comrades to think resiliency first, for themselves and others. Looking out for one another is part of the keeping of trust, he said.
