USARAF takes honors at Supply Excellence Awards

VICENZA, Italy - For the fourth consecutive year, U.S. Army Africa units have earned honors at the U.S. Army Europe Supply Excellence Awards.

“USARAF’s Property Book section and Headquarters Support Company supply room took top honors at the 2012 Chief of Staff of the Army Supply Excellence Award. For the second time in as many years, same elements of USARAF were recognized as the "Best of the best" winners in the Army European component competition,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Joachim Consiglio, the supply division chief for USARAF’s G-4 Logistics section.

HSC’s supply room was recognized as the top company level unit in Europe while USARAF’s property book office took top honors for property book operations.

“The SEA program recognizes the year’s best U.S. Army supply organizations in Europe in several categories. USARAF units have won or placed in the CSA's Supply Excellence awards program for the past four years,” Consiglio said.

USAREUR Commander Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling along with Command Sgt. Maj. David S. Davenport Sr. presented the awards to USARAF representatives, Daniel Brown, Sgt. Maj. Jennifer Tillman, Sgt. Zaki Johnson and Capt. Terri Mason.

Sgt. Zaki Johnson of USARAF’s HSC says the formula to supply success is due a process of “following the book.”

“Our road to success is something that everyone has access to – U.S. Army regulations known as ARs. There’s no way that any one person can memorize everything we do; however, by properly using the ARs and Department of the Army pamphlets, success is at your fingertips,” Johnson said. Johnson credits teamwork and dedication as the foundation for HSC’s success.

“Every person in our supply room puts forward full effort for mission accomplishment. This attitude helps us excel in supply accountability and customer service. It also allows us to build mutual respect for one another and makes our work environment more effective.”

Daniel Brown of USARAF’s property book office agrees.

“We have established a tightly woven group of logisticians within the command and with support of our senior leaders, we are able to be successful,” Brown said.

“We don't measure success by just winning the Supply Excellence Award – we hold ourselves and the young logisticians in the HSC supply room to high standards and our measure of success is defined by continually working to improve property accountability,” he said.

USARAF winners are set to compete at the Department of the Army level. A Supply Excellence Team evaluated USARAF’s HSC property book March 20-21. Department of the Army level winners will be announced in April.

“Preparing for the SEA competition is a team effort involving supply personnel, unit commander, and all members of the organization,” Consiglio said.

“Preparation for the SEA competition starts with complying with local inspection programs. Command supply discipline and command inspection programs represent tools used to identify units to compete in the SEA competition,” Consiglio said.

Consiglio said the award program was created in 1986, with the objective of enhancing readiness and Command Supply Discipline Program for Army units along with providing recognition for individual soldiers.

“The program also gives us a chance to show the public that we are a group of logistics professionals working to ensure high standards in our field,” Consiglio said. According to U.S. Army Quartermaster School officials, the goal of the SEA is an improved supply system and recognition of that improvement at the unit and organizational levels.

Johnson summed-up his team’s approach to customer service.

“Supply can be a demanding career field. Our customers depend on us to provide the tools they need. We’re a group of multi-taskers and we’ve become knowledgeable in a variety of areas such as weapons, chemical, biological warfare, and automation equipment as part of our daily responsibilities. The team enjoys the daily challenges of having our customers depend on us,” Johnson said.

In the future, USARAF’s Property Book section and HSC supply room will compete in the Army Service Component Command category.
