EASTERN AFGHANISTAN – The Afghan National Army Commandos conducted several key operations throughout eastern Afghanistan, March 13.
Members of the 1st, 2nd and 6th Commando Kandaks have been actively engaging insurgents throughout Paktiya and Kunar provinces in order to disrupt insurgent activities and to minimize their freedom of movement in several provincial villages. Within the last week, ANASF led clearing and dismounted patrol operations, along with their partnered coalition special operations forces, providing support.
In Paktiya province, the 2nd Commando Kandak conducted a clearing operation in Chamkani district, March 5. Villages in Chamkani district are traditional insurgent strongholds and are regularly used as hideout locations for insurgent fighters crossing Afghanistan’s eastern border region. Chamkani district has also been used as a staging area for improvised explosive device emplacement in the province.
The commandos conducted a key leader engagement with the village elders after the clearing operation, where they discussed security concerns.
Commandos from the 1st Commando Kandak also conducted a clearing operation in Sarkani district, Kunar province, March 6.
During the operation, insurgents fired on the commandos throughout the day with small-arms and sniper fire. The commandos sustained only one wounded in action during the firefight, and were able to tactically question over one-hundred citizens in the area. During a key leader engagement, a village elder said insurgents freely moved across the eastern border region and used intimidation tactics to force villagers into supporting their cause.
“These commando-led operations show the people of eastern Afghanistan that their soldiers, their sons, are willing to fight for their safety and security,” said Special Operations Task Force-East Commander, Lt. Col. William Linn. “The commandos are a legitimate Afghan fighting force that can respond at a moment’s notice, to protect and secure any and every village throughout Afghanistan’s provinces.”
In Jaji district, Paktiya province, commandos conducted dismounted patrols and key leader engagements in an historic insurgent stronghold, March 7. The commandos met with village elders in Dang Dang village, to discuss governance and development, and how the Government Islamic Republic of Afghanistan can support their concerns.
The commandos planned and carried out the patrols and key leader engagements with only limited support from coalition forces.
No civilian casualties or collateral damage was reported at the time of the operations.
