MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Lance Cpl. Daniel Dawson holds two separate billets with Marine Wing Support Squadron 271. He is a crew chief and aircraft rescue firefighter, what his co-workers have dubbed a “rescueman.”
“I love doing my job, and I joined to be a firefighter,” said Dawson, a 21-year-old native of Checotah, Okla. “If you think for one second this is actually a job then something is wrong. It’s not a job, it’s a passion.”
The camaraderie with the Marines makes the job all the better.
Dawson has been in fire services for roughly five years and is currently a volunteer at the Western Carteret Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
“If I’m not here, I’m running full time with the city department,” Dawson said. “What I get out of it is the chance to preserve life and property, emphasis on life coming first.”
Fighting fires for the first time is a cocktail of nerves and adrenaline that one can really understand until going through it, said Dawson.
