U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District has selected Classic City Marinas of Athens, Ga., to enter into a long-term lease for the marina site formerly known as Little River Marina, located on J. Strom Thurmond Lake in Appling, Ga.

Classic City Marinas was one of three applicants that responded to the Notice of Availability (NOA) to lease the marina site issued on Jan. 3. All applications were evaluated by a team of Savannah District personnel according to the four criteria defined in the NOA: 1) Diversity of marina facilities/development plan; 2) Experience and background; 3) Financial capability; and 4) Credit and background checks.

“Classic City Marinas’ application presented the greatest focus on modernizing and developing the marina business, the fastest implementation of key features, a substantial investment in facilities, and the most comprehensive and acceptable future development plan,” said Robert Jewell, chief of the management and disposal branch, Corps of Engineers Real Estate Division.

The planned facilities include new docks/mooring capability, increased parking for day visitors that includes large boat trailer parking stalls, a modern dry storage facility with launching/recovery system for dry storage boats, and above-ground fuel storage and dispensing systems.

The Corps intends to have the new lease in place no later than April 15, 2012, to provide minimal availability of the marina site for the 2012 recreation season.

Thurmond Lake is one of the southeast’s largest and most popular public recreation lakes. Each year, millions of people visit the many public parks, marinas, and campgrounds conveniently located around the lake to pursue a variety of outdoor recreational experiences, making Thurmond one of the top 10 most-visited Corps lakes in the nation. The man-made lake is located 22 miles north of Augusta, Ga., and borders Georgia and South Carolina on the Savannah River.

For additional information regarding the lease, please contact the Savannah District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Real Estate Division, chief of the management and disposal branch at (912) 652-5554.
