REPUBLICAN CITY, Neb.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Harlan County Lake is bumping up releases from the dam to 1,000 cubic feet per second beginning, March 5.
This high release rate will continue through Friday, March 9.
“Normally, we only release small amounts this time of year,” said Larry Janicek, a natural resource specialist at the lake. “The purpose of this release is to scour the river channel to remove vegetation and obstructions below Harlan County Lake to the Kansas state line.”
The state of Nebraska has invested approximately $1.8 million over the past three years in order to keep the river channel unobstructed. The last time water was released a a similar rate was in 2010.
