FORWARD OPERATING SHANK, Afghanistan - On the steps leading to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division’s Joint Operations Compound a person can see the clear blue sky dotted with clouds and the noticeable temperature difference between the sun and the shade, an important milestone was reached.
It was a milestone worthy of 21-years of service for Monolito Brown, a native of Valdosta, Ga., and the senior human resources sergeant in the brigade. It was a promotion ceremony where Brown pinned three up and three down, the rank of master sergeant.
“Officers join the Army and dream of one day making colonel and enlisted soldiers join the army and dream of one day making master sergeant,” said Col. Mark H. Landes, a native of Kingsport, Tenn., and the brigade commander. “He is the master of his craft and at the pinnacle of his career and we are recognizing that by promoting him to master sergeant.”
Senior enlisted promotions are based on the potential to serve in assignments of higher responsibility and rank, while also looking and reviewing past evaluation reports.
Starting a career with the Army in human resources, Brown has served all over the globe; from Korea to Germany, Iraq and now Afghanistan, Brown has served in various leadership positions to include recruiting duty in New Orleans.
Brown, who is deployed from Fort Bliss, Texas, expressed his love and gratitude to his wife and three kids who were not able to be at the ceremony, while also thanking Landes and Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Capps, the brigade senior enlisted adviser for the opportunity to lead the brigade.
He talked about memories and gave advice to the younger soldiers in the crowd.
“It’s been a long road as a [human resource specialist],” said Brown. “It’s been a long road and there were times I didn’t think I was going to make it because of the Army, because I thought I didn’t know my job that well, but if you keep believing in yourself and keep doing the things you need to do, you will be here one day.”
“Twenty-one years and it paid off for Sgt. Brown,” he said. “I didn’t give up, I could have, but I didn’t give up, and I don’t expect you to give up either.”
