SAR-E-PUL PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan Local Police defended a checkpoint from an insurgent attack in Sayad district, Feb. 19.
The ALP manning the checkpoint were engaged by 20 insurgents with rocket-propelled grenades, machine gun fire, and small arms fire.
The ALP immediately returned fire, and mounted a counter attack.
The conflict lasted more than three hours, ending when insurgents withdrew into the surround mountains, resulting in no casualties or injuries suffered by the ALP.
After the firefight, the ALP discovered two improvised explosive devices left by the insurgents. The ALP cordoned off the area and secured the IEDs until additional Afghan National Security Forces could destroy them safely.
A coalition special operations forces advisor praised the success of the ALP, noting it validated them as a well-trained defense force.
“This event demonstrates the ALP ability to defend itself and the local citizens from insurgent attacks,” he said.
