    NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan

PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Soldiers from the 2nd Commando Kandak safely destroyed an improvised explosive device in Gardez city, Feb. 18.

The Afghan Uniformed Police initially found the device, but immediately called the 2nd Commando Kandak for their internal expertise in IED destruction.

The commando platoon took control of the situation, assessed the threat, and destroyed the IED independently.

Residents of Gardez city were pleased to see that the IED reduction team consisted entirely of Afghan forces.

Because of the joint AUP and 2nd Commando Kandak security operation, insurgents were unable to follow through with intimidation tactics or attacks against the local populace.

In an interview with the Gardez public affairs office, both the AUP commander and the 2nd Commando Kandak Platoon Leader stated, “This is the first time in Paktya that two Afghan forces worked together to fight the insurgency.”
