NAPLES, Italy - Standing NATO Mine Counter Measure Group 2 recently completed a four-day visit to the Tunisian capital Tunis as part of the 2012 Mediterranean Dialogue Program of Port Visits.
Welcomed into port in the early hours of Feb. 9 by Tunisian naval authorities, the mine hunters of the group had a busy program of courtesy calls, force receptions, a well-attended media event, tourist visits and even a NATO versus Tunisian navy football game. Students from the Tunisian War College were welcomed aboard the flagship TCG Sokullu Mehmetpasa and were also given a tour of the other mine hunters.
As the ships left port Feb. 13, they were joined by Tunisian units for a day-long passage exercise. This allowed NATO and Tunisian crews to practice maneuver skills, firefighting and man overboard procedures with the events culminating in a sail past – an impressive moment which reflected the cooperative spirit of the entire port visit.
The deputy commander of Maritime Command Naples, Vice Adm. Andreas Krause, carried out a visit to Tunis in the same time frame which gave him opportunity to participate in the force reception as well as carry out an official visit aboard the NATO Mine Counter Measure Group 2 flagship and meet with members of the Tunisian navy invited by COMSNMCMG2 Capt. Abdulhamit Şener.
