URUZGAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Soldiers from the 8th Commando Kandak found and destroyed approximately 50 kg of marijuana during an operation in Doan-e Ulya Village, Shahid-e Hasas district Feb. 6.
The commandos were conducting an operation with coalition special operations forces to disrupt insurgent supply lines in the valley around the village.
While searching a village compound, the commandos discovered a room used to process marijuana. A search of the surrounding compounds yielded approximately 50 kg of the drug.
The commandos destroyed the cache and then questioned the residents of the compounds.
Uncirculated insurgent death threat letters were also found during the clearance of the village. The insurgent letters threatened death to any villager who helped coalition forces.
The operation concluded with a commando-led shura with the male villagers.
“The villagers were receptive to security forces being in the area,” said a coalition SOF representative. “They stated there is a consistent insurgent presence in the village, but they had left for Pakistan for the winter. The commando-led operation disrupted insurgent networks and encouraged villagers to reassess the security situation in Shahid-e Hasas district.”
