CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - The 18,500-plus single Marines on Camp Pendleton will now find it easier it easier to have their opinions heard.
It will no longer be a family readiness officer telling the commander what single Marines think. It will be a single Marine making known the issues of all single Marines in that representative’s unit, said Danielle West, SMP coordinator with MCCSCP.
“The difference with the new MARADMIN is that the single Marine representatives must be non commissioned offers and attend their monthly unit meeting while seated on the Family Readiness Command Team at battalion level,” West said.
The representatives will work together with the unit FRO and MCCS coordinator to plan, coordinate and conduct unit activities and special events, and ensure these functions incorporate the interests of the unit’s single Marines.
Single Marine Program representatives are being given a seat at the Family Readiness Command Teams at battalion level to allow the voice of single Marines to be heard within their command.
All single Marines in a unit are acknowledged as a unique group by the command and are provided the same level of command attention currently afforded married Marines and their families, according to Marine Administrative Message 757/11.
“The Family Readiness Command Team has been in effect for several years now,” said Scott N. Macfarlane, director of the Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Pendleton. “It was made up of the family readiness officer, the commander, and volunteers.”
Family readiness officers were tasked with presenting issues raised by the unit’s single Marine representative as part of family issues, said Macfarlane.
“A lot of commands say there’s nothing for the single Marines to do on the weekends,” said West. “Because the base is so big, it’s difficult to get all our information to more than 70 commands.”
Information distribution becomes more manageable by having the single Marine representative making information more readily available for the single Marines.
The SMP enhances the quality of life for single active duty personnel by providing positive and rewarding outlets through recreation, community involvement, and dynamic facilities.
