“Every citizen of this country should be guaranteed that their vote matters, that their vote is counted, and that in the voting booth, their vote has a much weight as that of any CEO, any member of Congress, or any President.” - U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Per Marine Administration Message 384/11, the Installation Voter Assistance Office was established to assist unit voting assistance officers and “provide voter assistance to all military and civilian personnel, as well as voting age family members, contractors or other civilians who have base access.”

Camp Pendleton’s IVAO opened Aug.1, 2011, and with an upcoming election, the time is now to make sure service members, their families and government civilians and contractors are doing what needs to be done to make sure their vote counts.

Located at Building 1160, Room 270, the IVAO currently serves all units within Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, and has worked since its opening to raise voter registration awareness throughout the base, said Dora Rodriguez, deputy adjutant for MCB Camp Pendleton.

“We take voting very seriously, and do everything we can to make sure we spread the message of voter participation,” said Rodriguez, winner of the 2011 Federal Assistance Voting Program slogan contest. “From banners and posters in high traffic areas to voting materials for all incoming personnel, the information is out there and we are more than willing to assist anyone with questions or concerns.”

The IVAO is manned Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and provides not only paperwork, such as absentee ballots, national voter registration forms and federal post card applications, but computer access to register online and transmission services to appropriate local and state election offices as well.

These services for service members, their families and government civilians are a vital part of ensuring each American utilizes their right to vote, said Rodriguez.

“Having this program is important because voting is the future of our country, and participation is crucial to its success,” said Rodriguez. “You have to vote to make a difference, and we’re here to make sure everyone gets that opportunity.”
