MANAMA, Bahrain - USS Dallas (SSN 700) departed Manama, Bahrain, Nov. 11, following a weeklong port visit that allowed the crew to conduct mid-deployment maintenance and take part in some well-earned liberty.

The port visit marked the midpoint of Dallas' six-month deployment in support of Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in the U.S. Navy 5th Fleet area of operations.

MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations also deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.

Cmdr. Gard Clark, Dallas commanding officer, said the Los Angeles-class attack submarine has been tasked with several missions since it departed its homeport of Groton, Conn., July 29.

"We can take part in MSO with several different capabilities that we're able to provide from the configuration of our submarine," said Clark.

While in port, Dallas crew members took time to tour the island and visit Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain.

"We have been taking advantage of the upgraded facilities at NSA Bahrain, as well as the Bahraini cultural tour programs," said Fire Control Technician 1st Class Joshua Grosswiler, Dallas' Fire Control Technician Division LPO.

Grosswiler said he even had the opportunity to accomplish one of his long-term goals while visiting Bahrain.

"My recruiter had a picture of himself riding a camel," smiled the Norwalk, Ohio native. "Now I have one, too."
