HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- For eight hours on Oct. 8, the base opened its gates to citizens of the Tularosa Basin and beyond so they could see firsthand what Holloman and the Air Force has to offer.
"The air show provided the base an opportunity to educate the surrounding communities on our mission while demonstrating the capabilities of the latest technology," said U.S. Air Force Maj. Derek Steneman, Legacy of Liberty open house and air show director.
Some of the U.S. military aircraft showcased at the open house were the B-2 Spirit Bomber, B-25 Mitchell Bomber, F-4 Phantom, F-22 Raptor and T-38 Talon which all took to the sky. Some of the U.S. military assets on display were the MQ-1 Predator, MQ-9 Reaper, CV-22 Osprey, B-1 Lancer and A-10 Thunderbolt.
However, the open house also had an international flair to it thanks to the aerial performance by the German Air Force's Tornado.
Civilian pilots also performed, to include Tim Weber, Robert Pezhold, Herb Baker, Greg Coyler and Matt Younkin, just to name a few.
The air show was highlighted by a performance from the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds' demonstration team.
"I thought the air show was outstanding," said Steneman. "Events like this really give pilots, both military and civilian, the chance to show the country what we are capable of. Being able to witness the pinnacle of America's air dominance was an awesome sight to behold. "
The open house was enjoyed by military and civilian patrons alike and words of praise were passed on as well. The words of praise also went the other way, from the military to the communities.
"We appreciate the residents of southern New Mexico for all the support they've given the base," said U.S. Air Force Capt. Michele Rollins, 49th Wing Public Affairs chief. "Not only does the community directly support our war fighters here, but also those who are overseas defending our freedoms first-hand."
To wrap up the 2011 Legacy of Liberty open house and air show, the base thanks those who came for all their support.
"We thank everyone who came out and enjoyed the show," said U.S. Air Force Col. Kevin Huyck, 49th Wing vice commander. "We truly enjoyed showcasing Holloman's and the Air Force missions with our surrounding communities."
