KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Alaska-based paratroopers formally took over operations in a transfer of authority ceremony here, Dec. 30.
The 725th Brigade Support Battalion (Airborne), Task Force Centurion, 4th Brigade Combat Team , 25th Infantry Division, Task Force Spartan, assumed responsibility of security and training operations in the province from the 201st Brigade Support Battalion, Task Force Centurion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke.
Task Force Centurion joins the rest of the 4th BCT (Airborne), 25th Inf. Div. in assuming responsibility of Khowst and Paktya Provinces in Regional Command-East.
The outgoing commander, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Dave Brown, expressed his gratefulness for the level of dedication demonstrated by their Afghan brothers, under the command of Afghan National Security Forces Col. Abdul Sami, Combat Service Support, 5th Kandak, 1st Brigade, 203rd Corps commander. “Serving with our Afghan brothers was all inspiring, and I am proud to have served,” said Brown.
The battalion was constituted in 1917 in the Regular Army as the 8th Sanitary Train and assigned to the 8th Division. The battalion has been part of many historical campaigns from French Morocco and Tunisia to Sicily.
“There is no mission too difficult. No sacrifice too great. The BSB 201st remains ever ready. Duty first,” Brown said in his closing speech. He added he was proud of the way his team performed in executing three-dimensional logistics in support of Task Force Duke.
The incoming commander pledged that the promise of continued excellence would prevail, including the service to the people of Afghanistan.
“We’re wholly committed to serving shoulder to shoulder with 5/1 CSSK,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Brad Hinson, 725th Brigade Support Battalion (Airborne), TF Centurion commander, who hails from Jackson, Tenn.
The changing of responsibility marks the end of a yearlong mission for Task Force Duke.
“It’s been a long year,” said U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Louis Angelucci, of 201st BSB, 3rd BCT, 1st Infantry Division, from Rockville, Md. “We’re handing it all over to a great team. Good luck to them.”
“We’re glad to be here,” said U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Brian Morrison, from the 725th Brigade Support Battalion (Airborne), TF Centurion, a Crawfordsville, Ind. native. “We’ve been training for 18 months, we’re ready and we couldn’t be happier with our predecessors partnership with the 5/1 CSSK command.”
