HERAT PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Afghan National Army’s 2nd Company, 9th Kandak Commandos worked with villagers to discover a weapons cache near the Shievashan village, Guzarah district, Dec. 11.

The commandos patrolled to Shievashan village, searching for insurgent presence and establishing a security presence in the area.

“The operation demonstrated the commandos’ ability to conduct ground operations in the area and provide security for locals in the Guzarah district,” said a Coalition Special Operations Forces team leader, who was present in an advisory role.

The commandos led the combined forces’ patrol by navigating the more than 12 km of terrain using their handheld global positioning system, maintaining communication and coordination with two foot patrols and one truck element throughout the operation.

Upon the patrol’s arrival, the villagers of Shievashan were very receptive to the combined forces and assisted the commandos in navigating the village. During the patrol in and around the village, the commandos were able to apprehend two individuals of interest and seize a weapons cache.

The cache yielded six rocket-propelled grenade rounds, four RPG launchers, six RPG propellant charges, at least 100 rounds of 7.62-caliber rifle ammunition, 10 rounds of .303-caliber rifle ammunition, four AK-47 rifle magazines, one hand grenade and three cell phones belonging to insurgent forces in the area.

Through interaction with the villagers, the commandos were able to gain valuable information about daily life there, demographics and local perception of the Afghan government, as well as possible insurgent activity in the area.

“The local perception and realization is that the Afghan government is actively providing security and stability for locals in the Guzarah district,” the SOF team leader said.
