WAREHAM, Mass. - The contributions of the Cape Cod Canal’s Marine Operations section were honored recently by the Commonwealth with the Wareham Crossings' second annual Braveheart Award for their service and dedication to the community.

The Braveheart Award honors every day heroes who have shown courage and compassion, bravely defying the odds to make a difference. The award was presented this fall during a ceremony at Wareham Crossing. Roger Mathurin received the plaque on behalf of the team.

In addition to the Braveheart Award, the team also received certificates of appreciation from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; the House of Representatives that was signed by Speaker of the House, Robert DeLeo, and State Representative, Susan William Gifford; as well as a certificate signed by Senator Scott Brown. Both of the certificates praised the team for outstanding service and dedication to the safety of the local community.

The award is a perfect fit for the team, whose mission is to keep the Cape Cod Canal safe for transits of commercial and recreational vessels. In 2010, the Marine Operations Section performed 487 small boat assistances. To date this year, they have performed 427 small boat assistances.

The Marine Operations Section is comprised of Mathurin, William Kane, Christopher DeMello, James Deal, Kevin Galvin, Danny Bartolome, John McCartin, Al O’Connell, Paul McIntire, Sue McDonald, John DeBoer, Brendon Doherty, Andrew Bishop, Christopher Phelan, Randy Mello and Dan Guiney.
