ZHARAY DISTRICT, KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan soldiers with the 1st Kandak, 3rd Brigade, 205th Corps are partnering with the non-commissioned officers and soldiers of Combined Task Force Spartan’s 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment to learn how to maintain weapons such as the M240B and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, two American-made weapons systems that are fielded to Afghan soldiers.
The goal of the program is teaching soldiers of the 1st Kandak’s 3rd Company how to properly take care of their equipment, while also teaching the Afghan NCOs a training style that can be utilized to teach others. These leaders can then go on to teach other soldiers, as well as local security forces in a more effective manner.
Soldiers from 1-32 Infantry Battalion conduct numerous training events on a daily basis with their partnered kandak. What sets this training apart from other training events, however, is not the subject matter itself, but teaching Afghan NCOs how to train and teach their own soldiers, as well as others. This is critical as Afghan security forces continue taking the lead in providing security to Zharay district.
The commander of coalition forces conducting the training, Capt. Moises Jimenez, said that his soldiers are starting off with the basics, and then progressing into intermediate and skilled stages of weapons maintenance.
“Attack Company leadership is adopting a “crawl, walk, run” training model to develop individual Soldier skill level tasks, as well as developing [Afghan security forces] leadership capability.”
While the Afghan Army continues to prove its proficiency and adeptness on the battlefield, they often have to depend on soldiers from CTF Spartan for assistance in conducting maintenance ranging from weapons to vehicles. Teaching NCOs how to take care of their own equipment, combined with train others will ensure that the soldiers of 3rd Company, 1st Kandak, 205th Corps are ready to face whatever missions they may encounter.
