SAVANNAH, Ga. - After decades of providing refuge to thousands of soldiers, five barracks at Fort Bragg are being upgraded beginning this month, courtesy of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah district.
The $20.2 million project, awarded to the Polote Corporation of Savannah, Ga., includes the demolition and debris removal, painting, new cabinetry, plumbing, electric, heating and air system, and new roof. It is slated for completion in October 2012.
“Our renovation of these facilities will provide soldiers with comfortable and efficient rooms,” said Charles Grainger, project manager for the district.
Four out of the five barracks in this project are Vietnam War-era; three-story, brown-brick buildings constructed in the 1970s. All five are in need of repair and renovation. The buildings are scattered across several blocks on the Army post.
“All of the buildings have three or four pods,” Grainger said. “Each pod has 12-barrack suites. The suites can house one or two soldiers, depending on their rank, and have a shared bathroom and kitchen. Higher ranking soldiers do not share a suite.”
This project is part of an ongoing program that provides funding to renovate aging facilities in order to replace deterioration that has accumulated over the years while providing energy saving upgrades.
“Every year Fort Bragg has a special budget and we typically handle projects ranging from roof replacements, to road repaving, full building renovations and anything in between,” said Grainger.
