BADGHIS, Afghanistan – Today, after a month of difficulties and delays, the 3rd Brigade (Bde) of 207th Afghan National Army Corps has increased its size with the deployment of a new Kandak. This new Kandak completed its training in Herat province during the summer, and after a brief stay in Qala-i-Naw, began in mid-October its movement to the district of Moqur, its final deployment place within the province of Badghis. The addition of this new Kandak brings the strength of the 3rd Bde to 70 percent of its final size.
This deployment has allowed the 3rd Bde to redeploy the Kandak that previously was in Moqur to Bala Murghab, where it has replaced another Kandak from other Bde of the 207th ANA Corps. Thus, all of the units in the province of Badghis are now under the command of the 3rd Bde, easing in this manner the command and control of its units. This will improve the performance of the Afghan units with an eye in the future transition of security responsibilities in Badghis.
To guarantee the success of this operation, the Spanish Provincial Reconstruction Team commanded by Col. Félix Eugenio García Cortijo (Spanish army) has had to do continuous patrols, occupying observation posts and cleaning and keeping under control the routes that were to be used in the movement. The Spanish held COP “Bernardo de Gálvez” in Ludina has been the intermediate base for the many convoys that have circulated through the route “Lithium”; more than 370 vehicles and 1,200 men have passed through the route secured by the Spanish soldiers.
All this movement of the ANA troops has required an important planning effort for the Staff of the 3rd Bde, advised and supervised by the mentoring team led by Lt. Col. Juan Manso (Spanish army).
The 3rd Bde of 207th ANA Corps is now composed of three infantry Kandak, one logistics Kandak and a garrison services unit. To reach its full size, it will include a Combat Support Unit, composed of engineer and artillery units, now under training in Heart, and a last infantry Kandak, under recruiting in Kabul.
