Joint ANSF/coalition forces air assault operation leads to cache finds in multiple compounds

KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces, partnered with coalition forces, conducted a two-day air assault operation, Oct. 26-27, to disrupt insurgent networks in the area, while discovering four caches consisting of improvised explosive device components, ammunition, and weapons.

Upon reaching the objective near the village of Pa’in Kelay in the eastern Band-e-Timor of southern Maiwand district, soldiers conducted thorough searches of several compounds in the area. Soldiers with Combined Task Force Spartan’s 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, discovered a small IED cache consisting of three IEDs specifically designed to explode in a designated direction, as well as radio antennas commonly used by insurgents.

Less than 90 minutes later, the joint element discovered an ammunition cache of different calibers of rounds and a pressure-plate component for use with homemade bombs. During a search, Afghan soldiers on site also discovered a five-pound bag of opium, thought to be used as currency by insurgents, hidden inside a compound northwest of the main objective.

The next day, the soldiers found a weapons cache composed of a single rocket-propelled grenade round, a booster for the RPG, and five 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds.

On the rapid operation, approximately 40 soldiers with the 6th Kandak of the 3rd Brigade, 205th Afghan National Army Corps, partnered with 150 soldiers with Combined Task Force Spartan’s 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment.

An air assault operation is a swift military insertion by helicopter, which denies the insurgents freedom of movement throughout Zharay and Maiwand districts of Kandahar province, while also finding and detaining their leaders and destroying supplies.
