    Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling

WASHINGTON - A first-round draft pick, four-time Pro Bowl National Football League player, most recently with the Washington Redskins, has joined the Public Affairs team at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling.

Outside Linebacker Ken Harvey became a contributing writer for JBAB’s Joint Base Journal and will provide post-game commentary, analysis and pre-game information for Redskins games.

In the off-season, Harvey will provide a column on leadership, motivational and other topics of interest to readers.

Harvey played 11 seasons in the NFL. Eighty-nine quarterback sacks and four appearances in the Pro Bowl earned his place in history as one of the Redskins’ greatest players of all time. He has also been nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Originally from Austin, Texas, Harvey attended the University of California, Berkeley. In 1998, he was a first round draft pick (twelfth overall) of the Phoenix (now, Arizona) Cardinals. Harvey played six seasons with the Cardinals and five with the Redskins.

From a list of over 100 candidates dating back to the Redskins’ beginning in the 1930s, a panel selected Harvey along with 66 other players and three head coaches as one of the 70 best of all time. The list also includes Joe Theismann, Darrell Green, Christian Adolph "Sonny" Jurgensen III, Mark Moseley and coaches George Allen and Joe Gibbs.

The panel consisted of former NFL players; Sen. George Allen (son of NFL coach George Allen); Football Hall of Fame and media representatives, including Noel Epstein, editor for the Washington Post; Phil Hochberg, who worked as the team’s stadium announcer for 38 years; football historian Joe Horrigan; sportscaster George Michael; sports director Andy Pollin; NFL Films president Steven Sabol and local news anchor Jim Vance.

Since retiring from the NFL, Harvey has engaged in a number of ventures, including writing a column and doing post-game interview/pre-game commentary videos for The Washington Post’s website, leadership and motivational speaking, and assisting other professional athletes with transitioning to retirement. He has also written two children’s books and a novel.

In January 2011, Harvey was one of four NFL players that came to JBAB to spend time with military and civilian personnel to watch the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears NFL playoff game and encourage the personnel to ask for help when they experience depression, thoughts of suicide or other potential mental health conditions.

During their visit, Harvey and the other players, renowned for their toughness, told the crowd that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength. Their message was aired on Fox News, Navy News, The Pentagon Channel and other media outlets. Coverage of the event is located at http://jointbase.wordpress.com/2011/01/17/nfl-players-interact-with-d-c-military-during-playoff-game/

Harvey’s addition to the JBAB Public Affairs team is one of a number of recent improvements. Recently concluding its first year of operation, the team has welcomed Senior Airman Steele Britton, who replaced another airman; Ms. Jackie Anders, a contract writer; and Air Force Staff Sgt. Brittany Jones, the team’s new non-commissioned officer in charge. The three joined Senior Airman Susan Moreno, Mr. William Wilson and Master Sgt. Rebecca Corey, who is currently detached for intermediate training at a Department of Defense school.

Together, the team has significantly improved JBAB’s print, visual, graphics and online products and services, including the addition of “man on the street” interviews, photo and feature stories and puzzles. Additional enhancements and an office relocation are planned, which will result in the ability to produce even better quality products and services, as well as community relations and youth group support.
