FORT HOOD, Texas -- The Department of Defense announced the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Sgt. John A. Lyons, 26, of Seaside Park, N.J., died Oct. 26 in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.
Lyons joined the military in February 2009 as a combat engineer and was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, since June 2009.
Lyons deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2010.
Lyons' awards and decorations include the NATO Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Combat Action Badge.
