    FORT HOOD, Texas - The Department of Defense announced Oct. 25 the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation New Dawn.

    Capt. Shawn Patrick Thoma Charles, 40, whose home of record is listed as Hickory, N.C., died Oct. 23 at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio from a terminal illness.

    He entered active-duty service in January 2009 and was assigned to 2nd Battalion 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

    Charles deployed in support of Operation New Dawin in August 2011.

    Charles' awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" device, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon.
