JOWZJAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. engineers with Task Force Roughneck, Task Force Sword, conducted a construction reconnaissance mission with Swedish army officers in relation to a security upgrade construction project at Forward Operating Base Monitor, Aug. 15.

TF Roughneck fully utilized their survey and design team to help create a plan for the FOB.

“The survey guys will produce a map that will show our exact scope of work,” explained U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kevin Pruitt with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, TF Roughneck, TF Sword, project manager from Abilene, Texas. “It’s never what you expect once you get boots on the ground, so you have to adapt and be flexible and that is a challenge for the coordination and the planning. The Swedes were very accommodating. [They] communicated very well with us. We had a very good discussion on how they wanted things.”

“The biggest challenge we have is land ownership. There is no actual line that borders the privately owned land,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Peter Fontejon with Detachment 1, 623rd Engineer Company, TF Roughneck, TF Sword, a heavy equipment supervisor from Atlanta. “I’m on this recon to check out the job site and see what equipment [we’re] going to need. I also wanted to see what needed to be done prior to coming out here. I’m glad we did. We can’t just go out there dozing down mud walls. Walls in Afghanistan usually mean it’s someone’s property.”

After the property lines were agreed upon and adjustments were made for the final plan, Swedish army Capt. Fredrik Brandberg with the Swedish 3rd Cavalry Regiment, a military assistant director of operations from Sverige, Sweden, said, “The next challenge is time. I know that we are in Afghanistan and things do take longer than we tend to project…but we’ll keep moving on.”

“We have big plans for FOB Monitor,” said Brandberg. “I feel confident that we have the administrative relations sorted out and look forward to working with the Americans.”
