ORLANDO – Few can become Marines, and even fewer can lead them.

A hand-picked team of Marines shared their experience leading Marines with college students and administrators from the Orlando-area based colleges and universities, Oct. 6-7, in Orlando, Fla., during a two-day seminar focused on Marine Corps leadership development.

“In the Marine Corps we believe we have very good leaders and we believe we make very good leaders,” said Capt. Joseph Adams, an instructor for the seminar. Adams continues to say the Marines are here to impart the Marine Corps leadership ethos to the college students.

The seminar featured presentations by Marine instructors from Marine Officer Candidate School and The Basic School on topics such as Marine Corps leadership principles, making leadership decisions and ethical leadership. The attendees also had to work through several scenarios where they each used their leadership abilities to lead their team through different challenges all while being partnered with an experienced Marine leader.

“Leadership is a real passion to me and I think one of the most important things we do is to grow our future leaders,” said Cabana, the seminar’s guest speaker and currently the 10th director of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center, and a retired Marine colonel.

Cabana also echoes Adams in he believes leaders are not born they are made, and with guidance and mentorship you can become an outstanding leader.

Many of the attendees are current undergraduate students from Central Florida colleges. The seminar allowed the attendees to see and experience first-hand Marine Corps leadership, which is what many of them sought from this seminar.

Matthew Nabbi, 23, an undergraduate student from the University of Central Florida says he expected to gain experience on how to better himself in the face of making moral decisions of right or wrong. He says this seminar has helped him understand that better now due to the exceptional guidance from the Marine instructors.

Nabbi also says, “The team building exercises were challenging, but it taught everyone how to use each other’s strengths and weaknesses to successfully navigate and complete the days exercises as a team.”

This is the Marine Corps’ third leadership seminar this year, which is part of the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ outreach program. Future leadership seminars are being coordinated for early next year.

“I believe the commandants’ concept of reaching out to America through its diverse college population is a solid way to connect with future leaders and inform them about the Marine Corps and its service to the nation,” said Dr. Ken Dunn, a retired Marine colonel and seminar leader. Dunn hopes MCLS raises awareness among minority college students, educators, and leaders across the country regarding Marine Corps leadership development and opportunities in efforts to shape a quality force that reflects the diversity of the nation it serves.”

When asked why leadership is so important, Maj. Ryan Orozco, logistics officer with OCS and seminar instructor responded with, “America’s sons and daughters are entrusted to us and that’s why we put such a high value on leadership.”
