MOSUL, Iraq (September 19, 2006) –Soldiers of 3rd Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, perform daily dismounted patrols talking to citizens of Mosul, Iraq, trying to build their confidence and earn their respect.
Recently, the Soldiers were in the Al-Kamara neighborhood talking to residents and handing out flyers of local anti-Iraqi-forces. Their goal was to identify residents fed up with insurgent activity and willing to provide information on AIF.
"We are trying to influence the local population in our favor and inform them of AIF personnel in their neighborhood. We are trying to win over the local populace," said Staff Sgt. Robert Wyper, squad leader, Co. B, 3rd plt, 3rd SBCT, 2nd Inf. Div.
According to Lt. Patrick Horan, platoon leader, Co. B, 3rd plt., 3rd SBCT, 2nd Inf. Div., his Soldiers walk the streets daily providing the community the security they deserve, while establishing a rapport with of the citizens to trust Coalition Forces.
"Hopefully they will turn AIF in, so we can capture them and turn this neighborhood into a safer place," said Horan, a native of Springfield, Va.
To aid their effort, 2nd Bn., 3rd Inf., Rgt., hand distributed flyers with names of suspected insurgents, and a web address, along with an 800 number for people to contact when they see or suspect insurgent activity.
According to Horan, the more involved the community becomes, the sooner the AIF activity will be eliminated.
