Joint ANSF/coalition forces air assault operation leads to capture of high-value insurgent in Zharay district

KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces partnered with coalition forces conducted a hasty air assault operation, Sept. 26, to disrupt insurgent networks in the area, while capturing three suspected insurgents, including a high-value insurgent linked to a homemade explosives cell in Zharay district.

Upon reaching the objective near just north of Highway 1 in central Zharay district, soldiers established observation posts and a cordon to observe insurgents’ attempts at fleeing to the north and east. Once the cordon was established, the joint element conducted thorough searches of several buildings at the target location.

While there, Afghan security and coalition forces detained three persons of interest, including one named Sadiq. A coalition forces female engagement team, a team made of all female soldiers, pulled several women aside at the scene, and questioned them about the three men. Also, two coalition forces’ military working dog teams entered the compound and immediately detected the odor of explosives in one room of the compound.

Although no explosives were found on site, patrol leaders from the joint element concluded the room had previously housed explosives, and that the dogs were detecting residue or residual odor.

A voice analysis of the high-value insurgent has confirmed the apprehension of the insurgent leader, who also has not been intercepted on signals intelligence networks since his capture.

On the rapid operation, approximately 40 soldiers with the 3rd Brigade, 205th Afghan National Army Corps, partnered with 130 soldiers with Combined Task Force Spartan’s 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment.

An air assault operation is a swift military insertion by helicopter, which denies the insurgents freedom of movement throughout Zharay and Maiwand districts of Kandahar province, while also finding and detaining their leaders and destroying supplies.
