KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - On a day when the United States of America remembers a tragic moment in its history, service members and civilians in southern Afghanistan are treated to a dinner from a familiar U.S. restaurant.
Task Force Resolute, 7th Sustainment Brigade, helped facilitate more than 30,000 steaks, donated by Outback Steakhouse Inc., that were served at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, Sept. 11.
The planning and coordination to make this operation successful was managed by Warrant Officer Nolan Kniss, the food service adviser for the 7th Sustainment Brigade.
“Our mission was to coordinate the arrival of the food in country, plan the food preparation at two Forward Operating Bases and five dining facilities on KAF, and finally execute it as smoothly as possible,” said Kniss.
Food was delivered to KAF almost two weeks in advance to ensure no delays. More than 20 personnel from Outback arrived in country to prepare and serve meals at two other FOB’s, Spin Boldak and Tarin Kowt, before ending their tour on KAF.
Feeding Freedom Tour, which is a collaboration of various restaurants owned by OSI, has been donating their food and time for the past nine years.
“The tour is comprised of all volunteers who work within the corporation starting the year after Sept. 11 2001,” said Cooper. “We are commemorating our soldiers for what they have sacrificed to keep the U.S. safe. We want to let them know how important they are to everyone back home.”
Outback Steakhouse Inc. brought along other notable dishes, including the Blooming Onion. Spc. Robert Davison, a food service specialist with the 7th Sustainment Brigade, was on hand at Niagara dining facility to ensure the food preparation.
“I have helped grilled 100 steaks already, with thousands more to go. I also made a few hundred Blooming Onions,” said Davison. “It is great to help out fellow soldiers, and I am happy to do it.”
Appreciation was long felt by another member of TF-Resolute who had his helping of Sunday’s menu.
“The food was great. I appreciate food and the time they took to come out. I am all about the support,” said Spc. Joseph Wytte, a senior Local Area Network manager with the 4th Finance Company, Special Troops Battalion, TF-Resolute.
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, many lives were taken unwillingly. The spirit of America could be seen as many citizens sacrificed themselves to help one another. Some citizens became soldiers to protect that same spirit. Ten years later, that spirit is as strong as ever.
