    BACKGROUND:

On Sept. 11, 2001 members of the 1st Battalion 101st Cavalry, which was then headquartered at the Manor Road Armory, assembled in response to the World Trade Center Attack even before Gov. George Pataki announced that he was mobilizing the New York National Guard. Elements of the 101st crossed New York Harbor on the Staten Island ferry that night and began taking part in rescue and recovery operations immediately.

Later that year the battalion was placed on 90 days of State Active Duty to provide security augmentation to the New York City security officer, guarding bridges, tunnels, rail stations, and other critical infrastructure.

In 2004 soldiers from the Manor Road Armory mobilized and deployed to Iraq in both 2004 and 2005.

Since then the Manor Road Armory and the soldiers stationed there have continued to play a key role in New York's military readiness.
