    5th Armored Brigade

CAMP RAVENNA, OHIO - The 1st Battalion, 362nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, “Renegades,” 5th Armored Brigade is engaged in a very unique and specialized training mission. This summer, Soldiers from the battalion have been at Fort Sill, Okla., to train and support the 1-204th Air Defense Artillery Battalion, Mississippi Army National Guard, and also just returned from a training mission in Ohio with the 2-174th Air Defense Artillery Battalion of the Ohio Army National Guard and the 2-263rd Air Defense Artillery Battalion of the South Carolina Army National Guard.

The 18 soldiers from the “Renegade” Battalion, led by Executive Officer Maj. Bryan Feeser, conducted post-mobilization operations for the 1-204th at Fort Sill, Okla., April 27 to Aug. 8. This training was conducted in order to ensure the Mississippi Guardsmen were properly prepared to conduct Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar operations in support of Operation New Dawn. While at Fort Sill, 2-6 ADA and Project Management C-RAM worked diligently with the dedicated noncommissioned officers of the 1-362nd in order to train them on C-RAM equipment the soldiers had not previously worked with. The 1-204th made great strides throughout the summer, and by the end of July, had successfully completed all training requirements for their deployment to Iraq.

“The 204th worked hard and did an excellent job throughout the summer; I am confident they are prepared to accomplish their mission in support of Operation New Dawn,” said Feeser.

In addition to the C-RAM mission requirements, the “Renegades” continuously conducted their primary requirement of preparing Air Defense National Guard units to meet the mission objectives of the National Capital Region, which consists of sites in and around Washington, D.C. From Aug. 6-20, at Camp Ravenna, Ohio, the 1-362nd participated in Exercise America’s Shield, a joint exercise that takes place once annually. This was the first year EAS was conducted at Camp Ravenna.

EAS participants are comprised of Air Defense Artillery National Guard units, and members of the U.S. Air Force communications squadron who work together to prepare for the mission of protecting the NCR from air threats. During this exercise, soldiers of the “Renegades” Battalion served as the element that trained and certified Avenger and Sentinel Crews of the 2-174th and the 2-263rd in order to prepare for their final post mobilization training event at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., in October.

“EAS tested both the 2-263rd and the 2-174th's ability to operate in a controlled environment in which each unit made the necessary adjustments every day to improve their overall operations,“ said Capt. Lewis Clark, “Renegades” operations officer.

The “Renegades” are the catalyst behind these adjustments. Both the 2-174th and the 2-263rd will continue to prepare for the previously mentioned Culminating Training Event in October.

While at the CTE, the dedicated trainers of the “Renegade” Battalion will certify crews, observe battle drills during live-aircraft exercises, and observe the soldiers of the 2-174th and the 2-263rd conduct stinger missile live fire exercises. Upon successful completion of the CTE, the 2-174th will be set up for success as the unit prepares to assume their protection duties at designated locations within the NCR in 2012.
