G 2/5 Marines! Attention On Deck!

Carolyn and I are excited to host George Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines in our beautiful home state of Michigan. We are proud to be “Michiganders” and will welcome you as honorary Michiganders too!

We are proud of our Marines. Michigan is home to the 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, with Garrison Headquarters in Detroit. Their history is a proud one. They fought at Kwajalein, Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima in WWII. They also bravely fought during the third battle of Fallujah. They are now doing a fine job during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As we meet again, we will not only be honoring each other, the brave Marines with whom we fought and are no longer with us, but also the Marines who continue the proud tradition of … “The few, the proud … THE MARINES!”

The 2011 reunion will be held 7 through 11 September, 2011 near Detroit, Michigan.

We will be staying at the warm and welcoming Clarion Hotel in Romulus.

We will also be inviting our new friends, the Edward L. Smith Marine Corps League Marines, who so graciously hosted our 2010 reunion with Red Hibbard.

We will be visiting the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village and the MGM Grand Casino.

The Henry Ford Museum is a spectacular historical treasure. You will see:
    - Presidential cars (including the limousine in which John F. Kennedy was assassinated)
    - George Washington’s campaign chest and camp bed
    - The Oscar Meyer Weiner-mobile
    - Abraham Lincoln’s chair
    - Cast of Lincoln’s hand and life mask
    - 100 years of American made cars (including FDR’s 1939 Lincoln convertible)
    - Railroad diner car
    - Rosa Park’s bus
    - 1902 Brougham—the last horse-drawn vehicle used by an American president
    - And much, much more!

Greenfield Village allows you to experience America as it was in the 1800’s. It has:
    - Thomas Edison’s “idea factory”
    - The Wright Brother’s bicycle shop
    - Garden Walk—beautiful gardens among real historic homes.
    - Real American homes and neighborhood settings, from humble early dwellings; the 1650’s Plimpton House, 1750’s Daggett Farmhouse to the 1840’s Susquehanna Plantation and the 1930’s Mattox house
    - Take a ride in a Model-T Ford (any color you like, as long as it’s black!)
    - Historic main street, including a general store, Eagle tavern, town hall, millinery, Martha- Mary Chapel and courthouse
    - The farmhouse where Henry Ford was born
    - And more!

Please see: www.thehenryford.org/village for more information.

The MGM Grand Detroit Casino is a beautiful facility. It rivals the beautiful casinos in Las Vegas. It offers:
    - Live entertainment
    - Penny slots (can you believe it?)
    - Craps, Blackjack, 3-Card Poker, Roulette, Texas Hold ‘Em, 7-Card Stud & more!
    - Video poker and slots
    - And for you Marines that are flush with cash: Baccarat!
    - For your relaxation: a luxurious spa, where you will be treated as a king or queen

We are hoping to have B. General Gordon D. Gayle and B. General Larry Nicholson can attend this year. Both have histories rich in the 5th Marines tradition. To have two Brigadier Generals that span 72 years of service in our Beloved Corps is remarkable, beautiful and an honor.

Let’s hope and pray they both attend this year.

So, grab your socks Marines! Front and Center to Michigan—September, 2011!

    Semper Fi,

    John Ray
