CAMP MARMAL, Balkh province, Afghanistan – More than 80 participants attended the second northern women´s security shura on Monday in Mazar-e-Sharif to discuss women's roles in Governance and Transition.

The event, hosted at Camp Marmal by Regional Command North, women leaders, International Security Assistance Force coalition and female engagement teams, invited female parliament members, women from Afghan National Security Forces and from all nine provinces within Regional Command North. They shared stories and discussed how to improve conditions and safety for women in Governance and Security Forces.

Major General Markus Kneip, RC North Commander expressed his opinion that Afghan women represent a significant portion of the population and they have to play a major role in Afghan society. “It is important for ISAF to support Afghan females at all levels.” Kneip said.

Another presenter in attendance, Fawzia Koofi, female parliament member of Badakshan province, surmised her thoughts by saying there will be no successful government without the participation of women. She went on to agree with Kneip that there have been many successes in Afghanistan in the last ten years.
