ZABUL PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Two security shuras were held in Qalat District with the provincial governor and village leaders July 29.
“There is a need to work with the local citizens to ensure security in their district,” said Mohammad Ashraf Naseri, Zabul provincial governor.
The Tarnak Wal Jadak security shura was held to discuss the Afghan Local Police program and district security with the district leaders to emphasize the importance of security.
“We want to work together [with provincial leadership] to support [Zabul province],” said Romanian Locotenent-Colonel Iulian Berdila, commander 2nd Calgureni.
The district governor said that most of his people are happy with the government. He said he knows the right kind of people to recruit for ALP and that it is best that they train in their own area.
“This is a way to move forward for Afghanistan,” said U.S. Army Col. Todd Wood, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division commander. “I am proud of the efforts of the governor and the police. The most important thing is to find the right people for the program.”
The Zabul peace shura was held for achieving a greater purpose for Afghanistan. The shura discussion was about peace and security.
“We are here to support efforts to secure the villages and the area,” said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Richard Lawlor.
Naseri asked his fellow countrymen to think of their women, to remember Afghanistan as the heart of Asia and that ultimately all Afghans are responsible when any of their countrymen dies.
Mullah Mohammad Yousef talked about how peace is in the Quran and how Mohammed was a man of peace.
“Peace will come through the mullahs,” said Yousef.
He stressed the need for local elders and tribe leaders to sit with Afghan Taliban to stress the need for peace.
Provincial Chief of Police Abdul Nabi Eilhem told the elders to remember all the progress that has been made. He invited the elders to exercise their freedom of speech and to call the police when they have problems.
“America is showing it does not want to conquer, but like with Germany after World War II, America helps rebuild, and they are doing that in Afghanistan,” said Eilhem.
Approximately 250 citizens attended the peace shura.
Afghan National Police provided security for the shuras on limited notice, and due to their professionalism, there were no civilian casualties or incidents during the shuras.
