GALVESTON, Texas -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract to SOL Engineering Services, LLC, an 8(a) small business, in the amount of $287,616.56 for a draft environmental impact statement for the Brazos Island Harbor Channel Improvement Project.

The draft EIS is part of the Galveston District’s draft feasibility report and navigation study to review enlarging the existing Brownsville Ship Channel by deepening the entrance channel, jetty channel, turning basin and the lower section of the main channel.

“These report findings are a required part of the submission package that we send to our headquarters in Washington, D.C., for review and approval from the Chief of Engineers,” said Project Manager Byron Williams, USACE Galveston District. “Without prior approval, the corps is not able to proceed with the improvement project or engage in a cost-sharing agreement with a sponsor.”

According to Williams, these reports will enable the corps to determine which improvement will net the highest return on investment and be in the best interest of the taxpayers and nation.

The EIS and feasibility report are scheduled to be completed by late 2013.
