NEW YORK – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, is carrying out missions to support recovery efforts in the New York City region following Tropical Storm Irene, including the city, parts of northern New Jersey and Long Island. Army Corps personnel are also continuing to monitor the historic flooding upstate and are coordinating with local and state partners regarding it.

“The city may have been spared what could have been a catastrophic weather event, but many people have still been and are still being greatly impacted throughout the region and our hearts go out to them,” said New York District Commander Col. John R. Boulé. “The Army Corps is committed to working with our local, state and federal partners as the recovery process moves forward.”

Army Corps personnel have begun post-storm assessments including along New York City’s coastline as well as coastal areas in Long Island and in northern New Jersey.

Army Corps crews will also be conducting hydrographic surveys to assess any impacts the storm may have caused to federal navigation channels in and around the New York and New Jersey Harbor. New York District’s fleet of drift collection vessels is clearing storm debris from the waters in and around the New York and New Jersey Harbor that could potentially be hazards to navigation. The Harbor is the busiest on the east coast and is an important economic engine for the nation.

On top of those missions, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is prepared to carry out missions in support of FEMA and has specially trained Planning and Response Teams at the ready should they be called upon.

FEMA has already requested Army Corps support to inspect various non-federal dams in communities along the Hudson River. The only dam owned by the Corps of Engineers along the Hudson River is the dam at Troy Lock approximately 150 miles north of the city and personnel are monitoring flooding there as well.
