CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - Col. Laureen M. Barone, a Tuxedo, N.Y., native, took the Oath of Office to become Third Army’s Command Inspector General during a ceremony here July 23.
“I’m very happy to be here as I join the Third Army team,” Barone said.
The IG position dates back to 1777, when Congress created the Office of the Inspector General within the Army. Two IG positions were authorized; each being responsible to review the troops, ensure officers and soldiers receive instruction during exercise maneuvers, make sure discipline was strictly observed, and to make sure officers commanded properly and treated their soldiers with justice.
With a 234 year history, the IG role has a proud and historic lineage. Barone realizes her place in history as she approaches her new role with eagerness.
“The IG position is very important,” she said. “I look forward to working with everyone in Third Army.”
Barone isn’t the only soldier who realizes how critical her role as IG is; her commanding general also thinks highly of her job.
“The IG is a position that helps us keep ourselves accountable to what we say, what we are standing for and what we are here to do,” said Lt. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, Third Army Commanding General.
Before the swearing-in ceremony, Barone was able to work with her new team and get a feel for her fellow soldiers.
“I am very proud of my IG team so far,” she stated. “We are here to service and assist you anyway possible.”
Barone and her team will help Third Army complete their mission of supporting the drawdown of Iraq and meeting the presidential direction in Afghanistan by talking with soldiers and bringing information to the commanding general.
“I know we will be committed to serving Third Army, the soldiers, families of the soldiers, and friends of this great command,” Barone said. “Patton’s Own.”
