BAGHLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Coalition Special Operations Forces, a Female Engagement Team and a Female Treatment Team conducted shuras with village elders and local women to discuss infrastructure issues and promote the local radio station in Babar village, Pul-e Khumri District, July 30.
More than 100 women gathered to engage the coalition force females while coalition Special Operations Forces held a shura with village elders from 10 surrounding villages.
The shuras were designed to demonstrate support to the female population, engage the village elders on problems in their village and promote the local radio station among a large representation of the elders. Both the local women and village elders expressed similar concerns over issues the villages were having.
During the meeting, the villagers complained about the lack of power, a need for a legitimate school, the need for midwives because the leading cause of death in women is death during childbirth, how many of the women are widows who needs help sustaining the household, the lack of a community well and the desire for better agricultural education because most of the villagers are farmers.
While meeting with the village elders, coalition Special Operations Forces used the opportunity to promote the local radio station and handed out radios to the primary caretakers in the households. They also provided instruction on how to use the radios.
A coalition SOF team leader said they intend to “follow-up this shura by providing the school supplies available and establishing a contract for well building, ASAP.”
The coalition forces plan to coordinate with nearby representatives from U.S. government organizations for agricultural education and clinic development.
