CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq – After graduating from high school, Sgt. Lydia Davis never imagined she would have a career as a soldier in the U.S. Army.

Now on her third deployment – the second to Iraq – Davis supports her fellow troops as the supply sergeant for Company C, 27th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division.

“Supply is a really big part of the company,” said Davis, a native of Dallas. “I’m part of a medic company, so it’s important that they always have the supplies they need. It could potentially save a life.”

There are only three supply soldiers working within the medic company, said Davis, without whom the mission would not get accomplished.

Besides issuing supplies and transporting equipment to and from the battalion headquarters, Davis is also responsible for keeping accountability of the company’s weapons, vehicles and computers.

“To some people, it may seem that we have a small role in the overall deployment, but our mission is to support the soldiers in the field and on the checkpoints,” said Davis, “and I feel like we’re getting the mission accomplished.”

The unit supply specialist recently earned recognition as the “Long Knife” Transition Soldier of the Week for her efforts in turning in excess amounts of theater-provided equipment while maintaining operational readiness.

Davis said it is good that the chain of command recognized the long hours and hard work she and her soldiers put in.

“The soldiers always motivate me to strive for excellence and be a better leader, so this recognition is not just for me, it’s for them too,” she said.

In addition to turning in theater-provided equipment, Davis and her soldiers manage and oversee the Army Direct Ordering budget for their company, which allows soldiers to order new uniforms and clothing accessories while serving overseas.

“It’s a big morale booster for the soldiers in this company when they get to receive new gear and uniforms,” said Davis.

Sgt. Corina Lopez, operations noncommissioned officer for Company C, 27th BSB, works with Davis to supply their fellow soldiers with the uniforms and equipment on the base and in the field.

“She is the driving force behind the logistical support for our company,” said Lopez, a native of Redlands, Calif. “She always has a lot on her plate, and she’s always the NCO you can count on to get the ball rolling and complete the mission.”

Before completing their deployment later this fall, Davis and fellow deployed 27th BSB soldiers will continue to support 4th AAB missions in U.S. Division – North in support of Operation New Dawn.
