WARDAK PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of 6th Commando Kandak, assisted by coalition special operations forces, conducted operations which resulted in the discovery of vehicles and materials for improvised explosives devices in Musa Kheyl village, Sayed Abad District, July 18.
The operation was conducted in response to recent intimidation tactics and murders executed by insurgents. The combined forces were able to conduct the operation in a bazaar and deny numerous suspicious vehicles from entering the area.
Several days earlier, on July 16th, the bodies of two Afghan National Army soldiers and an Afghan National Police member were found in Musa Kheyl village. The body of a villager from Hadir Kheyl was also found nearby, in Nasir Kheyl, the same day. Reports indicate all four victims were kidnapped earlier in the week by the insurgents, who hoped to barter with villagers for weapons.
During the operation, the commandos discovered 800 pounds of ammonium nitrate, a motorcycle and a vehicle, which were destroyed. They also recovered intimidating letters and other documents which were hung on doors of local villagers by insurgents.
The commando force also met with local villagers to address recent insurgent activity, violence and intimidation.
“The operation was a success. We hope to continue working with our coalition partners and have more successful operations in the future,” Col. Naim Majidi, 6th Commando Kandak commander said.
According to a coalition SOF team leader, this operation was intended to degrade insurgent capabilities in the area, including their ability to stage attacks and store and transport IED materials and weapons.
He also stated the operation was successful at inhibiting the insurgent activity in the area and clearly demonstrated the responsiveness of the Afghan National Security Forces and the government of Afghanistan.
