KONDUZ PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of 3rd Company, 5th Commando Kandak conducted a search and clearing operation which resulted in the detention of an insurgent facilitator in Mur Sheykh village, Aliabad District, July 16.
The commandos, assisted by coalition special operations forces, conducted these operations to disrupt a suspected improvised explosive devices and munitions cell.
During the search, the partnered force discovered an insurgent facilitator. The man was positively identified by other compound inhabitants and by a cast on his leg.
According to the partnered force, the insurgent facilitator allowed suicide bombers to stay at his house when they arrived in the area. His house was also frequently used as a meeting place for insurgent commanders to discuss attacks on checkpoints and convoys. He, along with two insurgent commanders, was responsible for attacking a local security force commander with rocket propelled grenades, machine guns and mortars.
A search of the compound uncovered recently purchased hand grenades, fuses and RPG warheads, along with plans to assist in the assassinations of local security force commanders so the insurgents could strengthen their control in the district, said a coalition SOF team leader.
The commandos continued with the operation, which led to the discovery of five sets of military uniforms, 60 rounds of machine gun ammunition and a protective vest.
The commandos detained the insurgent facilitator and immediately transferred him to Afghan National Police control.
