JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. – The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation Scholarship for Services recipients visited Naval Air Facility Washington on July 14 to learn more about the military and their future careers within the Department of Defense.

Students ranging from undergraduates to PhD candidates represent a $45 million investment in the DoD to promote the education, recruitment and retention of rising junior and senior students in the science, mathematics and engineering studies.

"The visit to Andrews was a perfect opportunity for the next generation of DoD scientists and engineers to learn firsthand how their efforts will directly impact the mission,” said Deborah Shifflett, SMART Program Manager.

Static displays of aircraft platforms included the E-2C Hawkeye of Airborne Early Warning (VAW) 121, C-20 Gulfstream of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 1, C-130 Hercules of Fleet Logistic Support Squadron (VR) 53, EA-6B Prowler of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 301, Marine Corps UC-35A Cessna, and Air Force UH-1D ‘Huey’ of 1st Helo Squadron. These displays increased hands-on learning opportunities for the students and their family members in attendance.

“Having future DoD systems developers and engineers come to Joint Base Andrews NAF Washington was an important milestone; these scholarship winners were able to see from an "operators" perspective what the projects they are currently or will be working on means in terms of an operational perspective,” said Lt. Cmdr. Ananad Mason, NAF Washington Operations Officer and coordinator of the event. “Getting real work exposure to systems and being able to see how they fit into an aircraft really brought home to these students the importance of what they are doing in the lab. “

“I thought that the technology everyone was working is state-of-the-art and I’ve very impressed at what I’ve seen today,” said Ms. Amanda Cortis, student at the University of Florida and 2011 SMART Scholarship recipient. “The SMART program has given me the opportunity to work with the military and serve my country in another way.”

“The best part of the event was having the students talk to the maintainers and pilots who use the systems they will be working on and also what the future needs of the fleet will be for future generations of major weapons systems,” continued Mason.

“It was great seeing the assets our country has for our defense but I was inspired by the people our country has working to insure its defense,” said Brett Smith, 2011 SMART recipient.
