FARAH PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Government of Afghanistan officially opened Masaw road to the public in the Masaw village and surrounding areas in Pusht-e-Rod District, July 4.
The new road will lead to improvements in security by enabling a faster emergency and security response time. It is also a more efficient route for local businessmen, allowing for an increase in economic development.
Hajji Omar Mussah, a local Afghan contractor, took on the project of building the new road to connect communities from the intersection of Afghan Route 515 to the Masaw village, 10 kilometers away.
“I am feeling very good today,” said Mussah. “The people of the area are very happy with the project.”
He added that the project “was a test for [him],” and that he was feeling good about how the local community supported it.
“For health and safety reasons, the ability to traverse this road will enable residents from the surrounding communities to get to the clinic quicker,” added a coalition Special Operations Forces project facilitator.
Before the road’s completion, the villagers of Masaw and the surrounding area were separated from vital resources by 10 kilometers of underdeveloped terrain and an emergency trip to the medical clinic became an hour-long venture.
Local citizens, hoping to find work or maintain their businesses at the Masaw bazaar, also found it hard to commute and their prospects suffered. The increase in traffic will help bring patronage to current businesses and entice other entrepreneurs to open shops.
“I think the project will do a lot,” said Farah Provincial Governor, Roohul Amin. “It will bring economic activities, education, and communication.”
“This is a good project, and it is my favorite in all of Farah,” he added. “I like to see roads, [aqueducts], and electricity.”
Another measurable gain from the installation of the new road is better security. The Afghan Local Police in the Masaw village and Afghan National Security Forces are now able to move freely throughout the area. Additionally, they will now have a means to cut across once-rough terrain instead of going around it.
Amin spoke about a recent incident where the Masaw ALP needed reinforcements to protect local villagers, and that it took four hours for the backup to arrive.
“Now, it only takes maybe 30 minutes,” he concluded.
The project itself provided employment for numerous local workers and allowed GoA security elements to provide a safe environment for work completion.
“This will give Afghans the capability of providing security for their people and bring development to the area,” said Maj. Mamoor Nabi, the Masaw village ALP commander.
With the opening of the road to the public, citizens of different tribes and vocations have come together. Whether farmer, merchant, or village security, all residents support the road opening and are happy with the outcome.
