MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Drivers here recently learned the art of keeping their vehicles looking “in regulation” by attending an auto detailing class provided by the Auto Skills Center here.

The Auto Skills Center here provided a free class that showed how to detail vehicles with just as much care as a weapon, June 18. This class, available to all authorized patrons, was a part of the master workshop series coordinated by Jose Ortega Garcia, the skills center manager.

Associates from Toy King Detailing came and showed attendees how to “put the shine back in their ride.” They held a short question and answer session and demonstrated how to use different waxes, machines and clay bars on the body of the vehicle.

“We come out here to show people on base how to take care of their car, no matter if it’s seasonal or day-to-day care,” said Steven Martinez, an associate with Toy King Detailing. “We demonstrate different products and techniques right in front of them.”

After answering questions, associates from the Toy King Detailing took attendees to a practice car hood to show different techniques to clean the body of a car.

If attendees felt confident enough, they could try the techniques with help from Martinez.

Throughout the class, prizes were awarded to the auto students. The grand prize was a complete auto detail, which was done by Toy King Detailing, at the Auto Skills Center following the class.

The winner of the detailing was Lance Cpl. Andrew Rodgers, military police, Headquarters Company, who had just purchased a 1987 Pontiac Firebird.

“It was pretty cool to win the auto detail,” said Rodgers. “The car looks way better than it did when I picked it up. It’s got this really great mirror look to the paint now.”

Lunch was provided by the Auto Skills Center. They coordinated with Taquizas 4 Joy to have a buffet-type bar of tacos.

“We love coming on base for classes and for detailing,” said Martinez. “It’s all about giving back to the military.”

The Auto Skills Center’s final class in the master workshop series will covers brakes, and is slated to be Sept. 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30.
