    Story by Capt. Stephanie Vanneman

    Task Force 44 Medical Brigade

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan - The United States Army Medical Service Corps has a long and distinguished history which can be traced back to 1776 when the Continental Congress assigned an apothecary to the first Army hospital.

This position denotes the beginning of 236 years of medical administration and scientific professionals working alongside clinicians. But it wasn’t until June 30, 1917 that the Army Sanitary Corps, which later evolved into the Army Medical Service Corps, was established.

Since then thousands of highly skilled and dedicated soldiers with a wide variety of scientific and administrative expertise have faithfully served in support of the Army’s health services mission

Task Force 44 Medical Brigade honored the rich history of the corps, celebrating the 94th birthday with an afternoon of professional development for Medical Service Corps officers.

More than 120 personnel joined in from all over the Afghanistan theater of operations, either in person or via video teleconference to participate in the celebration and to learn more about specific areas of concentrations from subject matter experts around the medical task force. The Medical Service Corps Chief Maj. Gen. David Rubenstein was the keynote speaker for the event.

Maj. Gen. Rubenstein provided the group eleven tips for maximizing a career in the Army and in the Medical Service Corps. He stressed diversity of assignment and taking personal responsibility for career management. He emphasized that education is paramount and does not stop with classes and internships, but that professional reading, networking, and communication are all vital to a successful career.

The birthday celebration concluded with a traditional cake cutting ceremony conducted by the most junior ranking officer, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Kirk Sullenburger from Sacramento, Calif., and the most senior ranking officer, Col. Donald R. West, the TF 44 MED commander.

The MS Corps offers numerous paths for its ever growing and ever changing workforce. It strives to create an atmosphere for professional and personal growth and development. Maj. Gen. Rubenstein closed the event by saying, “Enjoy what you do and do what you enjoy.”
