BADGHIS PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan citizens began construction of a dam for the Darrah-i-Bum village and its surrounding area, June 28.

On a landscape where water is limited and work for its inhabitants can run just as scarce, a project to address both issues was welcomed by the local citizens.

“Most of the villagers of Darrah-i-Bum will benefit from having a more stable water source that the dam will provide,” said a member of Special Operations Task Force-West.

At least 50 local residents of the Darrah-i-Bum village have been employed to work on the dam construction, which is scheduled to take approximately two and a half months to complete.

“This gives the residents a sense of ownership with the project,” said the SOTF-W representative. “The dam project has been well received by the villagers and village elders.”

He also reported that the workers stated they were happy to be a part of the project and they were also happy to be employed and able to provide for their families.

The Government of Afghanistan sent development advisors and security elements to oversee the site’s preparation and the beginning of the construction, which provided an increased amount of security in the area.

A U.S. SOF team member reported, as security improved, there was an increase in services to the construction.

Project supervisor, Sher Mohammad, directed laborers on methods of development, to enable a structured work environment for villagers working on their first construction project.

Village elders toured the construction site with Mohammad and provided further supervision for the workers.

“There is usually one or more elders present at all times to help supervise the workforce,” said a village elder.

The U.S.SOF team member added, “The project is building rapport between Darrah-i-Bum villagers and GoA, legitimizing the government in the eyes of the villagers and increasing the villagers’ willingness to participate in government projects.”

The dam is in the beginning stages of construction, as the workers are erecting the foundation, which when completed will extend six feet underground.

When finished, the dam will measure approximately six feet tall and tapered around two feet wide at the top. The dam will provide a more-consistent water source for agriculture and local services, allowing future social and economic development in Darrah-i-Bum to flourish.
