DAY KUNDI, Afghanistan - The provincial deputy governor held a development shura with coalition officials June 28 to discuss ongoing security and infrastructure projects occurring throughout Nili and the larger Day Kundi province.
Nili has been the benefactor of numerous development projects and initiatives from Non-Governmental Organizations due to increased security and stability in the area.
"We are hoping for more projects that will further connect the people of Day Kundi to the Government of Afghanistan, which will keep crime rates reduced in this area," said the provincial deputy governor. "These projects provide hope for the people as they see the infrastructure in their communities improve."
Currently there are various road work projects, governmental building initiatives, and school development occurring in Nili, but there are still ongoing challenges with security infrastructure, according to the deputy provincial chief of police.
"We are reaching out to other areas to eradicate poppy growth, crime and continue the stability in Day Kundi, but we only have 400 people divided by seven districts working with very limited resources," said the deputy provincial chief of police. "The Afghan government has given Day Kundi citizens a chance to serve their own people. We will not forgot it, nor will we ignore our commitment to making things better for the people of Nili."
Improvement in educational and healthcare facilities is also an area of concern for Nili officials.
According to the Minister of Women's Affiars, more than 95 percent of female children attend school, but many classrooms are held outdoors or are too small for the number of students.
"The women in this area are very intelligent and wanting to help their families,” said the provincial minister of women’s affairs. We have become self sufficient in many areas through education, but as the number of female students grow so should the classrooms."
Despite challenges, Day Kundi's deputy provincial governor said he believes his province is leading the way in Afghanistan for future development and quality of life initiatives.
"Over 55 percent of women vote, we have a dedicated police force, and we have respectable citizens who play an important role in our society," said the deputy provincial governor. "We just need to continue to provide them with resources that allow them to grow."
