GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Task Force White Eagle Provincial Reconstruction Team Polish army engineers assessed the progress of construction on two roads in Ghazni City, Afghanistan, June 14.
"During today's mission we verified two projects covering the road situated in the district and construction of new road sections in the center of Ghazni," said the chief of the PRT specialists, Maj. Stachowiak Arkadiusz.
The first road project in the district started several days ago, but the soldiers and engineers have to keep checking the various stages of execution. At the construction site, excavators and other heavy equipment are working intensively, said road construction engineer Polish army Spc. Konrad Smigielski.
"Despite the fact that the contractor started the project just a couple of days ago the amount of work done is impressive," said Smigielski.
PRT specialists verified progress on another project in the city center that includes as many as 19 road sections with a total length of 3,200 meters.
"This is a very large project aimed at development of two areas on both sides of the river of Ghazni. There will be a new road with sidewalks and drainage channels," explained Arkadiusz.
PRT engineer Polish army Spc. Zenon Łuczkowski checked the quality of the work done and took photographs to document the project.
"Half of the road is ready and prepared to cover by asphalt. This part of the road is almost finished. We are waiting only until the contractor puts up the curbs alongside the road and then we can allow the final phase of work," said Łuczkowski.
In the city center there are a lot of small shops and businesses. Shopkeepers are very interested in this new road project.
"Asphalt road and new sidewalks will be helpful for us. We will not have to pour water all the time to prevent dust. This is a very good project," said one Ghazni center shop owner.
TF White Eagle commander Brig. Gen. Slawomir Wojciechowski said, "Although the project Ghazni 2013 - Afghan capital of Islam is not an objective of our operation in Afghanistan, we are carrying out development projects to support the preparation of this great anniversary. Currently, the Agriculture Development Team is conducting nine projects and the PRT has another 13 in the Ghazni City.”
In addition, many projects are still in the process of approval and plans.
PRT representatives also visited one of the most famous archaeological sites in Afghanistan - Tepe Sardar. There, are the remains of a Buddhist temple complex which included collections of carvings and monuments depicting the Buddha in various stages of his path to Nirvana, and parts of a colossal statue of Buddha Mahaparinirvana.
"Today's visit was to check the condition of the archaeological site. The location is in very poor condition. In addition, we found fresh robbery holes. Someone tried to dig and search for sites on their own," explained the PRT archeology expert Agnieszka Dolatowska.
"Talks are being held with the Department of Culture and Information in the province of Ghazni to improve the situation and secure the area around the place,” she added.
