CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. - A welcome ceremony was held for soldiers with the 643rd Regional Support Group returning from Afghanistan at Camp Atterbury, Ind., June 12.

The 643rd Regional Support Group is an Army Reserve unit headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, staffed with soldiers from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, Nebraska, Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and South Dakota. The 643rd RSG deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from July 2010 through June 2011, providing garrison support duties at Kandahar Airfield for U.S. military and DOD personnel. The 643rd received a Meritorious Unit Citation for going beyond the expectations for their mission.

The 643rd RSG, a 60-soldier unit, provided billeting, logistics, sustainment, and infrastructure development for both the base and projects that benefited the people of Afghanistan while at Kandahar Airfield, which is a NATO base. They coordinated the arrival of eight brigades, three naval construction regiments and 10th Infantry Division (Mountain). They also provided training for over 11,000 personnel.

To meet the requirements of the mission, the soldiers of the 643rd worked an average of 16 hours a day, said Col. Chris Gentry, of Franklin, Tenn., commander of the 643rd RSG.

“These guys did a fantastic job,” said Gentry. “We had a number of different missions at Kandahar and worked with a wide variety of coalition partners.”

The welcome home ceremony was the last threshold for the 643rd RSG, who completed their demobilization process at Camp Atterbury, as they transition from active status back to the Army Reserve.

“This event is sometimes bittersweet,” said Gentry. “We may not see some of these guys again for a long time. What they did over there is something that they can feel proud of.”

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Gentry released his soldiers from active duty as his last order on this mobilization.
